Meeting a photographer, Wing Huie
Wing Huie is a professional photographer. He was born and raised in Duluth, MN, and now works in and around Twin Cities. My friend HT happened to know him and set up the meeting with him. Wing was so kind to open his studio and let us in (it was Sunday), and we had a very nice conversation with him, seeing his exhibitions on the wall and original prints on the work desk. He has been focusing on life and cultures of Asian American people (especially in Minnesota), and he told us what he thought and how he took those pictures. In general, it is hard to take pictures of people as they are, but it is even much more difficult to do it in their daily life, especially when they live in a culture different from yours. In the year of 2000, he exhibited over 600 pictures (out of 18,000 pictures he shot!) take about Lake Street, Minneapolis, MN, some of which were 6-foot tall and put on walls or bus stops along the street. His books ("Frogtown" in 1996 and "Lake Street USA" in 2001) are available at bookstores, so you may be interested in taking a look at his work. His new exhibition is coming in this spring ("9 Months in America" at Museum of American Art, St. Paul, MN).
